GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 TODAY November 6, 2007, 6:00 p.m. the Young Professionals of the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League will host and event entitled THE STATE OF THE ORLANDO BLACK PROFESSIONAL. The event promises to be educational as well as a networking opportunity to connect with other Black professionals in the Orlando community!  For additional details, please visit: http://yporlando.org/.  It will be held at the Orlando Public Library 101 E. FAMU Black Law Student Association cordially invites you to attend an Affirmative Action Debate on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 @ 4:30pm at the FAMU College of Law. The debate will focus on the landmark case of Grutter v. Bollinger, and topics to be debated include (1) whether the case was decided correctly, and (2) the current effects of that decision on today's law schools. The debate will feature Ms. Patricia Broussard - Professor of Law at FAMU  and Mr. Todd Gaziano of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC. The debate will be Moderated by the President of the Florida Bar, Mr. Francisco Angones. A reception will immediately follow the debate.

The Orange County Bar Association is seeking nominations for the William Trickel Award (over 15 years practice); the Lawrence Mathews Young Lawyer Award (less than 15 years in practice); and the James G. Orange county Bar Association

Orange County Bar Association is sponsoring its Third Annual Poker Tournament on Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 5:30 p.m. The OCBA Poker Tournament will be held at Tanqueray’s located on the northeast corner of Pine Street and Orange Avenue.  The rules are traditional Texas Hold 'em tournament rules with trophies and bragging rights for the top finishers.  The entry fee is $25 per person and sponsorship opportunities available at $150, $250 and $500. For those who wish to just socialize and watch the admission fee is only $10 All participants receive complimentary beer and Cuban appetizers. Local celebrities will be invited to participate and will join various the sponsors tables. In year's past they have had such distinguished players as Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orlando City Commissioner Phil Diamond and Channel 6 reporters Tony Pipitone and Todd Jurkowski. The event’s proceeds will benefit the OCBA Foundation Inc., which is the not-for-profit endowment arm of the OCBA. Through the years, Foundation funds have been used to support programs such as Teen Court, Drug Awareness Programs in schools, campaigns promoting the Bicentennial of our Bill of Rights, high school mock trial programs, scholarships, and various other law related educational programs. The Supervisor of Elections for Orange County has approved PCP to Adopt- a-Precinct and assigned the Pine Hills Community Center to PCP for 2008 election! Our organization will provide the personnel to staff the Election Board on Election Day. We need at least 15 volunteers who are Orange County registered voters to assist on election-day. Training will occur in January and is mandatory by Florida law. The training for most positions is 3-5 hours. Some positions available for you to consider include Touch screen Tech, Internet Oath Person, Tabulator Inspector, PR/PL Inspector, Ballot Issuer, Poll Deputy and Clerk. REPRESENTATIVE GERALDINE THOMPSON AND PINE HILLS COMMUNITY COUNCIL SPONSOR PINE HILLS ECONOMIC SUMMIT

Representative Geraldine Thompson, in conjunction with the Pine Hills Community Council, will sponsor the Pine Hills Economic Summit on Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 6:00 pm at the Pine Hills Community Center, 6416 Jennings Drive, Orlando, Florida. The summit will be an opportunity for business owners and residents to talk to offer solutions. The focus of the event will be discussing strategies to help restore economic power to the Pine Hills community. Participants will focus on a myriad of topics, including business development, the new Evans High School, crime prevention, neighborhood improvement and civic pride. The summit grew out of concerns of the Pine Hills Community Council which functions to assure the continued vitality of Pine Hills as a unique, family-friendly place to live and work.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2007, Jones High School will be participating in "Teach-In 2007" to celebrate American Education Week. PCP is invited to participate. This event is sponsored by Orange County Public Schools, Bank of America and The Orlando Sentinel. The purpose of this event is to bring business and community leaders to the classrooms to discuss a variety of topics including career fields, employability skills, and the importance of post-secondary education and/or overcoming obstacles.
